If this morning was any indication of how getting up and out of the house is going to work when school starts, then I am screwed. There was copious amounts of pulling the covers over the head and whining and dragging of the feet and fighting over which cup of orange juice belonged to which child. Personally? I'm of the opinion that if there is the same amount in both cups and both cups are identical (same color/make/model), then WHY DOES IT MATTER?
Anyway, I got Emily registered for school, which means that I can mark at least one thing off my list for today! She went with me because I thought we could take a look around and meet her teacher. Plus, she really wanted to see the Library. But the teachers are in training today, the Library has just been refloored so we couldn't go inside, I needed to have two proofs-of-residence instead of the one that's indicated on the school website, yadda yadda yadda. So, we're going back tomorrow for the Open House from 5:00p.m.-7:00p.m. to meet Emily's teacher, see her room, and take the fricking BOX of school supplies so I don't have to fool with that on Friday morning.
Okay, about school supplies...when I was in elementary school many moons ago, I took with me a pencil and a notebook on the first day of school. Emily's school supply list has sent me all over the city hunting and gathering. I still have yet to locate construction paper and writing tablets. Apparently they are not to be found within a ten-mile radius of the 'burg. I have to admit that I have some harsh feelings about rolls of paper towels, hand sanitizer, kleenex, band-aids, Clorox wipes, and a gazillion pencils being on the list. I mean, truly, I want to help a child who might be in Emily's class that doesn't have the resources to buy gobs of school supplies. But every dollar in our budget is allocated and to supply a child with paper and pencils because of lazy and/or irresponsible parents who've decided that 20 out of 25 children will bring everything on the list so their kid is covered just plain makes me angry. Plus, I pay my taxes. Why do I have to send soap and paper towels with my child to school? Gah!
Obviously, I am worked up over school supplies. What I'm not worked up over? The Presidential election. I'm actually concerned that I'm not more interested. I'm not particularly affected by either candidate. Truth be told, I lean more towards Republican than Democrat, but neither platform makes me go "Yay!" nor does it make my blood boil. I'm hoping the VP candidates will help me decide or at least make me a little more interested. I love my country. I love that my husband is serving our country. I love my freedom and having a part in the democratic process. But in my small corner of the world? I'm just trying to feed, clothe, and house myself and my children with hopefully a little left over for an occasional ice cream cone and the three rolls of paper towels I have to send with Emily to school.

They make you bring paper towel?? That's ridiculous. And construction paper? Do schools no longer have supply budgets?
I have never heard of such a demanding list of school supplies. My goodness.
I thought OUR lists were ridiculous even 25 years ago, but this is beyond belief...
